On Friday afternoon, Graham Lay our fulltime instructor phoned me from a petrol station in Simonstown to let me know that his car had been broken into (3pm) and 3 cylinders, cell phone's etc had been stolen out of his boot. The usual method of entry, a screwdriver through the drivers side door. While I was on the phone with Graham, Mike from Replay (a second hand shop down the road from Orca) phoned to say that he had received a call from a customer on a cell phone and that they have 3 dive cylinders for sale and that they were on their way, would Replay like to buy them. I was in Replay Sports (3:30pm) when the thieves arrived. Not sure what to do I took my digital camera out side to film the situation. As I took the photo, a car blocked my view. When I lifted my eyes from the viewfinder I found a "City police" car with four uniformed police, wearing bullet proof vests in front of me. (see photo) Talk about luck. You can just imagine the look on the thieving swine's faces when we walked across the Main road and confronted them. The suspect told the police that he had bought the cylinders from the Cape Adds. I had my cylinder log book with me, serial numbers and all. The police arrested him on the spot and took a firearm from his jeans pocket. Something I'll remember the next time I confront a thief. Anyway, a weekend in jail gave the main thief time to wonder how he got BUST so soon after stealing from a car in Simonstown. You may recognise the white bakkie in front of Replay Sports. We could not hold the driver as he claimed that he gave his friend a lift. (found him hitch hiking on Chapmans Peak) Right !!! I found out this morning from the Fishhoek police that the bakkie is not registered. We had our cylinders on the shop floor before my instructor and students got back to the shop. Graham and the students arrived in their speedo's because all the clothes had been stolen. Had we had got those details sooner I may have recognised the rucksack on the front seat of the bakkie. Unfortunately we had two young French students on course who will now go home with less clothing and a very negative view of Cape Town.
